You already know that working on the side can help you pay for those extra expenses and save for retirement.

But it can also help you afford your passions.

If you’re an athlete, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t be able to take advantage of your hobby in the form of a side hustle. Here are five ideas that could make this possible:

  • Create a vlog or blog helping athletes find the right gear for them
  • Be a photographer or videographer
  • Train others to improve their performance
  • Become an event organizer
  • Enter competitions as an amateur athlete

Create a vlog or blog

If you’re a recreational athlete, your side hustle might be as simple as helping other athletes find the right gear for them.

If you’re a runner, you can create a blog or vlog highlighting your favourite running gear and what works best for you. If you’re into biking or hiking, you can do the same thing with bike gear or hiking gear.

As a fitness enthusiast yourself, you’ve probably spent lots of time researching and trying out different brands and models of gear. Other people who share your passion will appreciate having someone they can trust to recommend the best products on the market.

Become a photographer or videographer

You could consider working as a photographer or videographer

One place where there’s a huge opportunity is at athletic events. People will always want a memento of the occasion. You’ll also have the opportunity to meet other athletes and get paid for your work.

If you’re a runner, consider joining a running club and volunteering to be the group’s photographer. If you’re a cyclist, offer to be the club’s official photographer. If you like to hike, you can offer to sell people photos taken out on the trail.

You can also earn money by selling photos of yourself in action on sites such as Shutterstock.

Train others to improve their performance

Consider training other runners or cyclists to improve their performance.

If you’re a runner or cyclist, you’ve probably heard of the idea of training groups. Groups of people get together to run, bike or swim and follow a set schedule that improves their fitness levels over time. They might meet at the same time every week at a set location and follow a plan created by an experienced coach.

While these groups are great for many people, they can also be expensive. Some coaches charge hundreds of dollars per month for their services, which can be hard for many people to afford. That means there’s an opportunity to make a little extra and be an affordable option.

Become an event organizer

If you’re looking to make some extra money, becoming an event organizer is a great way to get involved with these sports and make some money at the same time.

Here are some ways you can do it:

Start your own race — Whether it’s a 5K or a marathon, running races are popular events that can be very lucrative. You’ll need to invest in some equipment, but once you have it set up you’ll be able to charge participants entry fees as well as take donations from sponsorships. If you’re good at marketing and promoting your race online, this could become one of your biggest sources of income.

Host a bike ride — Another great way to get involved with cycling is by hosting a bike ride yourself. This might include organizing routes for others who live nearby or for those travelling from out-of-town. You could also host larger events like cyclocross races or gran fondos (which are popular in Europe). These types of events often require local permits and insurance coverage so make sure you know what’s required before getting started!

Enter competitions as an amateur athlete

You don’t have to be a professional athlete to win prize money. In fact, you can enter competitions as an amateur and still win some cash.

The sports world is full of amateur competitions that offer prize money to those who perform well. And while these competitions may not be as lucrative as the Olympics or the Tour de France, they’re still worth participating in if you have a passion for your sport.

OK, perhaps it’s a little out of reach for 99.9% of us but still, it’s a possibility if you’re very, very good!

You can make some cash while doing the sports you love

Yep, it’s not beyond the realms of possibility, by taking up one of these side hustles or indeed one of many more, you can make a little extra money by doing the sport you love.
